The role of standards in active ageing highlighted at European Covenant on Demographic Change assembly

Posted in News

Active and healthy ageing (see the UNECE Active Ageing Index), as well as the implications at both individual and collective level, were discussed during the General Assembly meeting of the European Covenant on Demographic Change, held in Bilbao on 26 September.

PROGRESSIVE partner, AGE Platform Europe, which is actively involved in the Covenant as a member and secretariat, as well as PROGRESSIVE Advisory Board member, ANEC, participated in the meeting.

For many years, ANEC has lobbied for the use of standards to enhance the safety and usability of products and services for older people, and for people with disabilities.

If standards for mainstream products and services do not meet the needs of all consumers, then many products and services cannot be used by a significant minority of the population. ANEC strongly believes that standards are a suitable tool to mainstream accessibility if Design for All principles are applied. Design for All (DfA) means designing everyday products and services so that as many people as possible can use them, regardless of age or ability.

The meeting also saw the Covenant take over the reins of the European Silver Economy Awards which aim to at promote partnerships under the common vision of an age-friendly Europe.
